What to Wear for Family Photos: Outfit Ideas for the Beach, Gardens, and Riverfront

If you’re planning family photos and looking for family photo outfit ideas, you’re not alone. Choosing outfits is one of the biggest stress points before a session, especially when you’re dressing multiple people and want everyone to look coordinated without feeling too matching.

I photograph families regularly in Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, and nearby areas, so this guide is based on real sessions and what actually photographs well. Instead of sending you to Pinterest and hoping for the best, I want to give you simple, practical advice you can really use.

Family Photo Outfit Ideas: Start Here First

Before you choose a specific color palette, start with a few simple rules. These family photo outfit ideas will help your images feel timeless, cohesive, and natural.

  • Stick to 3 or 4 colors max across the whole group
  • Coordinate instead of matching exactly
  • Avoid neon colors and busy patterns
  • Skip logos and graphic tees
  • Start with one outfit, usually mom’s, and build around it
  • Choose clothing that feels comfortable and fits well

Most importantly, wear something you can move in easily. If you are constantly adjusting straps, tugging at hems, or asking your child to stop complaining about itchy clothes, that stress will show up in your photos. So, comfort matters just as much as color.

What to Wear for Beach Family Photos

Beach sessions are soft, airy, and relaxed. Because of that, the best outfits usually reflect the natural colors around you. For beach sessions, I love comfort colors, muted pastels, and soft neutrals because they photograph beautifully against the sand, sky, and ocean.

  • Muted pastels like blush, sage, dusty blue, and lavender
  • Soft neutrals like cream, beige, ivory, tan, and light gray
  • Lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, and gauze
  • Flowy dresses for moms and girls
  • Simple button downs, polos, or henleys for men and boys
  • Barefoot or very simple neutral sandals

In other words, think effortless instead of overly styled. Soft movement, natural textures, and colors that do not compete with the scenery usually work best. If you are unsure, keep it light, soft, and comfortable.

What to Wear for Garden Family Photos

Garden sessions give you a little more flexibility because the setting already has color, texture, and depth. So, this is a great place to bring in richer tones, subtle patterns, and a slightly more styled look. At the same time, muted colors still work beautifully here too.

  • Jewel tones like emerald, navy, rust, plum, and mustard
  • Muted colors like dusty rose, olive, soft blue, and warm cream
  • Subtle florals or very simple patterns
  • Textures like lace, knits, eyelet, linen, or layered fabrics
  • Dresses, rompers, and polished but comfortable pieces

Because gardens tend to feel romantic and colorful, this is often the best location for families who want a little more color in their session without going too bold. However, you still want the outfits to complement each other rather than compete.

What to Wear for Casements and Riverfront Family Photos

For The Casements and riverfront locations, I recommend a look that feels a little more polished. These settings have beautiful architecture, greenery, and a classic coastal feel. Because of that, I love outfits that feel elevated, clean, and timeless.

  • Coastal preppy styles work really well here
  • Button downs, sundresses, skirts, and clean silhouettes photograph beautifully
  • Blues, whites, soft greens, tan, khaki, and light navy are all great choices
  • Simple prints can work, but keep them minimal
  • Dressier than the beach, but still comfortable and natural

For example, this is a great location for a blue and white palette, soft green with cream, or tan and white with light blue accents. As a result, the whole session feels classic and pulled together without looking stiff.

Common Outfit Mistakes to Avoid

Even when families try hard, there are a few outfit mistakes that come up again and again. Fortunately, they are easy to avoid once you know what to look for.

  • Everyone wearing the exact same color and style
  • Too many loud patterns in one group
  • Neon colors that reflect onto skin tones
  • Bright white on everyone with no variation
  • Uncomfortable clothing, especially for kids
  • Shoes that clash with the setting

Also, dads often get overlooked in the planning process, but their outfit matters too. A well fitting neutral shirt always photographs better than a graphic tee, athletic shorts, or sneakers that do not match the overall look.

Simple Family Outfit Formulas That Work

If you still feel stuck, here are a few easy formulas that photograph well and take the guesswork out of getting dressed.

  • Beach: Mom in a flowy cream or blush dress, dad in a light blue button down and khaki shorts, kids in soft pastel tones
  • Gardens: Mom in a floral or solid jewel toned dress, dad in a neutral button down, kids in muted coordinating colors
  • Casements or Riverfront: Mom in a sundress, dad in a crisp white or blue shirt, kids in soft blues, greens, cream, or tan

That said, you do not need to overcomplicate it. Usually, the best family photo outfit ideas are the ones that feel simple, flattering, and true to your family.

Final Thoughts on Family Photo Outfit Ideas

The best family photo outfit ideas are comfortable, coordinated, and appropriate for the location. When your outfits work well together, your session feels easier, your images look more polished, and you can focus on connecting with each other instead of worrying about what everyone is wearing.

If you are planning a session and still feel unsure, I am always happy to help with outfit guidance. You do not have to figure it out alone.

For local inspiration, you can also take a look at The Casements to get a feel for one of my favorite riverfront portrait locations.
