I am a firm believer that the beach is good for your soul. The ACTUAL beach, not photos of it, not some sand in a jar, but getting your butt to the beach. The sound of waves crashing can’t be replicated on a noise machine, the breeze in your hair can’t be replaced by a fan blowing on you. And don’t get me started on how healing salt water is. I may be a bit biased having grown up in a beach town, but I truly feel that the ocean is healing on so many levels.
The Remington family had a beach photo shoot recently. I truly feel like this family has love that was just magnified by being next to the ocean. Take a look at some of my favorite shots:
Here’s to happy memories at the beach!
“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it be rather a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”
– Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
When Scot contacted me to photograph his proposal to his girlfriend, Kerry, I immediately said yes. He proceeded to tell me how they met and how he was going to propose to her. What he told me next just made my heart swell with joy.
Kerry’s ten year old daughter, Libby, would also be with them when Scot popped the question. He wanted to do it after church, on Valentine’s Day, at the end of Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Not only would he be giving Kerry a beautiful ring, but he also got Libby a memorable piece of jewelry as well – a ring with their three birth stones in it, to signify his dedication to both Libby and her mother.
Squeeeee!!! Yes, I started crying as he was telling me this amazing idea. So around rolled Valentine’s Day, and me and my trusty assistant (Liz S. #2) went to Flagler Ave to to photography an unaware Kerry and Libby with Scot – I think we were pretty good secret squirrels.
I’ll let the photos tell the story.
Spoiler alert: She said yes!
Cheers to love between the shores of all souls!
Jackie & Carl traveled all the way from New York with their little girl Gigi to visit family and enjoy the Florida sunshine. We set up their family shoot and some special maternity photos for Jackie down at one of my favorite spots in Ormond Beach. Here are some of my favorites:
Family coming together just to enjoy each other’s company is something so special to me. I have mentioned before that I come from a pretty large family on both my mother and father’s sides. I think when you throw some sand, salt air, the ocean, and relaxation into the mix it’s a recipe for a wonderful time and lots of memories made. I grew up going to the Outer Banks to vacation with my mom’s side of the family from a young age, and there is nothing like the ocean and togetherness to make a family vacation perfect.
The Chandler family made time to get together and enjoy some of the sun and surf at Daytona Beach recently, it was a pleasure shooting some photos for them!
Here are some of my favorites:
Is solace anywhere more comforting than in the arms of a sister.”
When I think of a sister, the faces of my stepsisters Jackie & Tracy come to mind. They’re super outgoing and awesome people and for sure the closest people to sisters I had growing up. My parents didn’t have any girls of their own after me, so having a sister to debate with over the best boy bands or sharing clothing with was not something I ever experienced. I never had to share my room, or wonder if my sister stole my lipstick, or had a sister to borrow shoes from.
So to me, sisters are kind of awesome to take photos of – especially at a younger age. Sisters Brie & Meagan were so much fun to photograph with their parents Nicole & Craig (and their sweet dog Mr. Myron). We got some great shots of them at their home that overlooked a beautiful lake surrounded by a forest, and then headed down to Flagler Beach. They are definitely the sweetest pair of sisters and I’m so thrilled to share some of their photos here:
Here’s to sisters everywhere!
Brothers & sisters are as close as hands and feet.
The bond between siblings is often a complicated but rewarding one. I guess I should know. I have 2 full brothers, 3 half brothers, 2 step brothers, and 2 step sisters. So in many ways, yes, I think have a good feel on the many dynamics that exist between siblings. I am the oldest of all my brothers from both of my parents’ marriages. I don’t have any sisters by blood, but being the only girl of 5 brothers gave me a certain insight into how boys can be. (Think: rough and tumble) There’s something REALLY cool about being a big sister, and something oddly satisfying knowing that you’re the eldest sibling. You get to “show” them things as a big sister. You become an example for them, and often become the guinea pig for your own parents on how to do it right. (Here’s a hint: there is no one “right” way….or at least that is what I’m learning as a parent myself).
Having siblings means not only sharing space and toys, but sharing parents affection and time. It means shared responsibilities, and shared moments. And more importantly than anything else, it means sharing love and life lessons.
Stephanie & Daniel recently welcomed a new baby boy, Alexander, into their home, and Arianna, their oldest child, is a new big sister at 3 years old. She is so loving and sweet with him! It was so awesome to see how much Daniel & Stephanie love their two little ones. They all have a very special bond, and Arianna is clearly a natural at being a big sister!
We popped down to a beautiful spot called Seminole Rest in Oak Hill, Florida. The natural beauty of this area is outstanding, and a great park to get away from the hustle and bustle. I highly recommend it for picnicking or just to take a stroll around some nature and historic sites. Here are some of the shots we got while walking around.
Here’s to siblings and their unbroken bonds!
Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.
I love this quote. It’s always held a special place in my heart because it puts into words what the heart feels as a parent. My daughter and I are always told how much we look alike, but if you scratch the surface, I see all sorts of things that she does and says that remind me of my husband. It is like having a “mini-us” walk around and do all sorts of cute and adorable and amazing things.
This past shoot with Jennifer & Randy and their adorable little girl Hannah was spectacular. Jennifer is due in 7 weeks and she is absolutely glowing. I was so excited to take photos of their awesome growing family! We picked a great little spot at the beach near Port Orange and got some sweet shots of them enjoying some sand and surf. And some scarves 🙂
Hope you all get a little sun, surf and sand in your summer schedule!
Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind.
Lilo, ‘Lilo & Stitch’
From an early age, I’ve learned a thing or two about the importance of family, especially after I had my daughter more than three years ago. Not just having relatives, but having FAMILY. It’s something special, a bond that you can’t duplicate or create out of thin air. It takes time. It takes effort. It takes lots of love and patience. There will be tears, temper tantrums, and dirty diapers. But there will also be late night snuggles, little flutters of kicks inside of your belly, midday phone calls from your loved ones just to say hi.
I love the movie ‘Lilo & Stitch” (yes, I said I have a three-year-old….soooooo of course we’ve watched it about 4 dozen times) but the quote that will always stay with me is the one on Ohana. I have never been to Hawaii but I imagine the beautiful word ‘Ohana’ rolling off the tongues of the natives when they embrace their loved ones and it brings a smile to my face.
Nicolette, Josh & Atlas were absolutely the embodiment of family. Nicolette and Josh have baby #2 on the way, and although we didn’t get that essential sibling-kissing-mama’s-belly shot (haha, yes, Atlas, I’m talking to you!!) we totally had a blast! We headed to the beach over the Dunlawton Bridge and we got some beautiful photos during ‘the magic hour’ (around sunset). Enjoy some family inspiration!
Here’s to Ohana!

Ralph Waldo Emerson
Saturday I was fortunate enough to be asked to be a vendor at Nana & Me Kid’s Exchange Expansion Party in South Daytona, where I had a small mobile studio setup for families to have their pictures taken. Each and every family and child brought a smile to my face – every single child and parent I met that day was so incredibly unique and special. I am so grateful that you let me photograph your families!!
Here is a sneak peak of some of the awesome families I have shots of:
And those last two are twins.
Looking forward to showing you the final products!!
